ROSES’ FISH “SUQUET” Roses’ cultural wealth is also found at the table. As dynamic as the town, the local cuisine has experienced a series of changes and evolutions. The town’s traditional fishermen created a recipe based on a combination of fresh products. In coves or at home "Suquet" was cooked, a simple dish of freshly caught fish boiled with potatoes. Over time, this homemade recipe has been enriched with the incorporation of typically Mediterranean products, giving rise to different versions of this dish. The restaurants taking part in the “Suquet de Peix de Roses” campaign present various versions of this traditional fisherman’s dish, as well as offering a wide range of wines from the Empordà region.
Situated in the peninsula of cap de Creus and with a port, protected from the north wind with the land rising by just about 600 metres called Pení, and with a special luminosity, Cadaqués straight away transmits a revealing personality. It is one of the more well known localities of the Costa Brava, due to the cultural activities there, especially in the summer, and also for being a stepping stone to Portlligat, for many years the summer quarters of Salvador Dalí.
In the first half of this century, a group of intellectuals and artists, initially grouped around the Pitxot brothers, and later, another group linked with Salvador Dalí, provoked a general interest and curiosity for the town, releasing its unstoppable growth and prosperity.
The most interesting religious building in Cadaqués is the parish church Santa Maria, situated high up in the old part of the town, it's a moderate late Gothic building, which houses a noteworthy gold Baroque altar-piece designed by Jacint Moretó and carried out by Pau Costa in 1725.
Since 1970 during the month of August, the Cadaqués Music Festival has been celebrated in the parish church that renown directors, bands and interpreters attend.
Other places to visit are cap de Creus, where you can see the lighthouse and other essential equipment for maritime navegation and which have been lashed by the hurricane-like tramontana; and Portlligat, where you will find Salvador Dalí's house, with big eggs on the top, which was the "divine" surrealist's residence and refuge of inspiration. At the moment, one can visit the House-Museum at Portlligat.
